Bicycle Accident Hotspots in Indian River County

Bicycle Accident Hotspots in Indian River County

Florida’s warm climate and scenic coastal routes make bicycling a popular outdoor activity throughout the Treasure Coast region. Cyclists are a common sight on roads throughout Indian River County, whether it’s tourists cruising to the beach or locals commuting along Vero Beach streets. Unfortunately, the same roadways that make bicycling enjoyable can also present significant dangers.

Bicycle accidents carry a high risk of serious injuries. Even a relatively low-speed collision between a car and a bicycle can cause devastating injuries. Understanding where these types of accidents tend to occur can help cyclists take precautions. If you are hurt, our Florida bike accident attorneys will fight to hold the responsible driver accountable for your losses.

At Gould Cooksey Fennell, we are dedicated to helping accident victims get justice. We are fierce advocates for our clients, working tirelessly to help them get the compensation that they deserve for their losses. The Reality of Bicycle Accidents in Indian River County

Bicycle crashes are unfortunately not rare on the Treasure Coast. In 2025, there were 73 bicycle accidents in Indian River County. In those crashes, 3 people died, and 66 people suffered injuries.

These numbers highlight an incredibly important point: bicyclists are among the most vulnerable road users (along with pedestrians). Unlike drivers, they have no protective vehicle frame, airbags, or seatbelts. When a collision occurs, the cyclist almost always suffers injuries, which can often be catastrophic.

Serious bike crashes in Indian River County frequently involve:

  • Left-turning vehicles that fail to yield
  • Distracted driving
  • Drivers passing too close to bicyclists and/or bike lanes
  • High-speed roadways with limited bike infrastructure
  • Poor visibility at intersections or at night
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs

While bicycle accidents can happen anywhere, certain roads and intersections in Indian River County have been the sites of particularly serious crashes. If you are heading out on your bike, you should be particularly cautious of these areas

State Road 60 (SR-60)

State Road 60 is one of the most heavily traveled east-west routes in Indian River County. It connects the beachside area of Vero Beach with Interstate 95 and communities farther inland. It is also one of the more dangerous roads for cyclists.

In one tragic incident, a bicyclist riding in the bike lane on the 7800 block of SR-60 hit debris and fell into the travel lane. He was struck by an SUV traveling alongside him. He ultimately died of his injuries.

SR-60 is dangerous for bicyclists for a few reasons. It has a relatively high volume of traffic with higher speed limits compared to many local roads. It also has narrow or inconsistent bike lanes in some sections. Many vehicles also make frequent turns as they enter and exit shopping centers and side streets.

Even when bike lanes exist on SR-60, they often run directly adjacent to fast-moving traffic. This leaves bicyclists with little margin for error.

Old Dixie Highway Corridor

Another area where bicycle accidents occur frequently in Indian River County is along Old Dixie Highway. This north-south route runs parallel to U.S. 1 in some parts of the county.

There have sadly been many serious and fatal crashes along this road. In 2022, a bicyclist died at the intersection of Fourth Street and Old Dixie Highway. The crash occurred when the bicyclist entered the roadway and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

This corridor presents several dangers. There is limited protected cycling infrastructure, although there are some bike paths. However, there are numerous intersections and business entrances, with drivers often turning across bike paths or shoulders. These intersections are especially hazardous because motorists often do not expect bicyclists to approach from the side. Old Dixie Highway also has moderate to high traffic speeds.

Indian River Boulevard and Merrill P. Barber Bridge

The intersection where Indian River Boulevard meets the Merrill P. Barber Bridge is also considered a hotspot for bike accidents. After a recent fatal accident there, the Florida Department of Transportation proposed installing improved traffic signals and warning systems to reduce the risk of collisions.

Bridge approaches are frequently dangerous for cyclists due to faster traffic speeds combined with narrow shoulders and limited escape routes. Drivers are often focused on merging or lane positioning in these areas, rather than watching for cyclists. In addition, when bike lanes disappear or narrow near bridges, cyclists may be forced into vehicle lanes.

Other Bike Accident Hotspots in Indian River County

While the majority of bike accidents in Indian River County happen on major roadways, the reality is that almost any street or road can be the site of a bicycle crash. Bicycle accidents often occur on neighborhood streets and secondary roads. This often happens in more populous cities, like Vero Beach. These crashes often occur at night or in low-light conditions due to poor visibility.

Intersections are also a risky place for bicyclists, whether they are located on major highways, rural roads, or residential streets. Intersections have many characteristics that contribute to crashes. There may be:

  • Limited visibility due to vegetation or terrain
  • Stop-controlled side streets (rather than lights)
  • Lack of street lighting

In addition, on less-traveled roads, drivers often don’t think to watch for cyclists. This can lead them to pull out or turn without thoroughly checking for cyclists. When drivers fail to slow down (or bicyclists fail to yield when required), catastrophic accidents can and do occur.

Common Causes of Bicycle Accidents in Indian River County

Across accident hotspots and areas where bike accidents occur infrequently, there are some commonalities. The same type of carelessness (negligence) tends to appear again and again in these crashes.

Common factors leading to bike accidents include:

  1. Failure to yield: Many collisions happen when drivers turn left across a cyclist’s path or pull out from an intersection or driveway without checking for bicycles.
  2. Distracted driving: Texting, using GPS, or other distractions can lead a driver to take their eyes off the road and fail to notice cyclists.
  3. Speeding: Higher rates of speed dramatically increase both the likelihood of a crash and the severity of injuries.
  4. Poor road design: Many Florida roads were designed primarily for cars. This leaves cyclists with narrow shoulders or poorly protected bike lanes.
  5. Debris or road hazards: Poor road conditions, like debris or potholes, can force cyclists into vehicle lanes unexpectedly.

Because cyclists have little protection, bike crashes often result in severe injuries. This may include things like traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, internal bleeding, road rash, and soft tissue injuries. In some cases, a bicyclist’s injuries are so severe that they are ultimately fatal.

Even when cyclists wear helmets and protective gear, collisions with vehicles can still be life-altering. In these situations, a personal injury lawsuit can be the best way to recover the compensation that you need for your medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other losses.

Can Bicyclists Prevent Car Crashes in Indian River County?

Not all bike accidents are preventable. If a driver suddenly veers into a bike lane, it can be hard to avoid the collision. However, there are some things that bikers can do to minimize the risk of being in an accident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), bicyclists can take the following steps to reduce the likelihood of being hurt in an accident:

  • Understand when and where accidents tend to occur. Most fatal bike accidents happen in urban areas, often in low visibility conditions.
  • Be prepared before heading out on your bike. Ride a bike that fits you and that is in good working condition. Your bike should also have reflectors and lights, particularly if you plan to ride at night.
  • Always wear equipment to protect you, including a helmet and bright and/or reflective clothing.
  • Plan your route before you get on the road. Choose routes with less traffic and slower speeds whenever possible. You should also try to avoid the Indian River County bike accident hotspots listed above.
  • Drive defensively. This involves being focused and alert. You should always assume that the other person doesn’t see you and look ahead for potential hazards.
  • Always bike predictably so that drivers can get a sense of what you intend to do and can react to avoid a crash. For example, you can use hand signals to indicate a turn.
  • Avoid distracted biking.
  • Obey street signs, road markings, and traffic signals.
  • Drive in the same direction as traffic.
  • Never bike under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

While you can’t prevent every accident, taking these common-sense precautions can decrease the likelihood of being in a crash involving a car. Wearing the right safety gear, particularly a helmet, can also lower the likelihood of suffering severe injuries.

If you are hit by a car while riding your bike in Indian River County, a Vero Beach bicycle accident lawyer can help. Your attorney can help you navigate the process. They can also fight to get you the compensation that you deserve.

Insurance companies often try to shift blame for accidents onto bicyclists, arguing that they failed to yield or were somehow not visible to motorists. A Florida personal injury attorney can investigate the facts of your case to prove that the driver was responsible for your crash. This may involve interviewing witnesses, reviewing police reports, analyzing the crash scene, and obtaining traffic camera footage.

Proving that the driver caused the crash is the first step to obtaining compensation for your injuries. A Florida bike accident lawyer can seek money for your medical bills, lost wages, property damage, pain and suffering, future medical care, and emotional distress. If a loved one died in a bike accident, they can also help you pursue a wrongful death claim.
